Childcare

Our childcare programs help children develop physically, socially and emotionally. Children learn how to get along with others and develop communication skills. We have programs for children two to 10 years old:

* General childcare (age 2)

* Preschool (ages 3 to 5)

* School age (kindergarten through 3rd grade)

Childcare programs are available in many locations, all staffed by licensed child care staff. We also give meals and snacks to all children in our childcare programs.

Many of our Childcare Programs are subsidized by the government.

caring for children

It’s been said that play is a child’s job. It’s how children learn, explore and develop. At the YWCA of Contra Costa County/Sacramento, our childcare programs encourage play as a way of developing a child’s social and language skills, their physical and mental abilities, and their creativity.

We offer several programs for children of different ages and needs, all delivered in licensed facilities by qualified teachers and staff. Because individual attention is important, there typically is one adult for every eight children in our preschool classes; one adult to every four children in our general childcare classes; and one adult for every 14 children in the school age program. In total, we care for more than 300 children.

general childcare

These programs provide year-round, all-day care for children age two. Individual and small activities focus on developing the emotional and social skills children will need when they start school. Children get breakfast, lunch and a snack. Classes are held Monday to Friday. Hours vary by location. (See chart)

Because our programs are funded in part by the State of California, care is provided at no or low cost to parents who:

  • Meet the state income requirements, and

  • Work OR are seeking employment OR are attending school or job training OR are unable to work because of disability.

The program at our Freedom (Oakley) center also accept full-fee families.

preschool

California State Preschool Program (CSPP) is for children ages three to five. These children will be learning how to get ready for kindergarten. Teachers will provide academic learning such as focusing on recognizing and writing their names, numbers, shapes, colors. They will also learn correct ways of cutting and gluing. Other skills that will be taught are social skills, such as learning how to line up, take turns, resolve problems on their own, etc.

We offer a part day program that runs three and a half hours each day, and a full day, for those parents that need all day care. In order to qualify for this program, parents must meet income eligibility and for the full day preschool, the basis of needing care for their child. Sites that offer CSPP are: Richmond, Shadelands, Delta, Bay Point, Antioch, and Oakley.

general childcare

The General Childcare Program is for children age two until they turn three, and school age, which services children ages five to eight. The Richmond site and Bay Point sites are the only ones that offer toddler care.
